Chinese-American Wedding at the Haiku Mill Maui

Marysa & David's Romantic Maui Wedding At the Haiku Mill

Marysa & David exchanged vows at the Haiku Mill  - It was a perfectly small gathering between their closest family and friends. The festivities started with a Chinese Tea-Ceremony as the Bride and Groom wanted to incorporate some of David's family traditions into the day. The Tea-Ceremony was followed by a beautiful traditional Western wedding ceremony & dinner reception. Marysa loves everything French so touches of Chinoiserie  were infused into the wedding decor.  Chinese tin-tins, pops of red, gold colors and geometric patterns made up the wedding decor. Multicultural Destination Wedding at the Haiku Mill

Special Touches Make This Maui Wedding Special

This gorgeous Bride and Groom (who preferred to remain anonymous) had a very specific vision of what they wanted their guests to experience. Their vision was very much based on feeling and emotion as opposed to using tangible images as a source of inspiration.  Their wish was to create the perfect backdrop to their love story, by transforming the gorgeously rustic Haiku Mill into a haven of comfort.  They wanted very much for everything to feel natural, and to simply accent the already incredible natural brick, vine, weathered rock and wood of the Mill's interior.

In addition to their wish list of feelings that they wanted conveyed, the couple also wished to incorporate elements of the Groom's Indian heritage within the event as well, without too much of the amplified opulence of a traditional Indian wedding. Adding ceremonial Hindu rituals, such as the puja ritual (offerings), allowed for their closest friends and family to actively participate in the ceremony, adding a very important feeling of intimacy to their event.  Their hands were wrapped together with a red sash as they performed the Saptapadi (Sanskrit for seven steps) around the Holy Fire (Agni).  With each step, the groom's aunt called out a vow to establish aspects of a happy relationship and household for each other.

To create the setting they envisioned, we set up plush Turkish rugs, tons of accent pillows, coffee tables, varied vintage decor pieces, side tables, and nick knacks, giving the Mill's lounge areas the feel of an exotic living room.  The dining tables themselves were all unique and inviting, accenting different elements of glass, drift wood, overflowing arrangements of flowers and fruit, and candles, candles, candles!  Instead of mounting a temporary trellis, the oh-so talented Bella Bloom attached individual vines and blooms to the existing vines that crawled up the entry way to the Mill.  Instead of bringing in glassware for the accent arrangements, we utilized the weathered and moss-covered ceramic urns from the Mill itself, and filled them with an abundance of flowers, falling over the edges to add on over-grown affect.  Captured by the very-talented Rebecca & Jonathon Tamiz Photography.

Belle Destination Weddings Featured on Style Me Pretty

Maui Wedding: Mandy and Peter

If you were perusing through the beautiful wedding blog of Style Me Pretty yesterday, you might have noticed it's Maui Week!

It's always an honor to be showcased as one of Style Me Pretty's feature destination weddings. Photographer Joanna Tano  captures the romance and essence of the word LOVE with our bride, Mandy and groom, Peter.  With the breath-taking backdrop of the Haiku Mill, Mandy looked stunning in her Liancarlo wedding dress and blue Badgley Mischka shoes.

Details were important to this couple, from soft crystals hanging from the tent, to the delicate spray roses placed individually in each glass.  As wedding planners and stylist, we love the attention to detail this wedding brings to life.  Hope you enjoy the photos.

Marla & Gary – unlock the spirit of love on Maui

The Ring

About 7 years ago, when I was just a getting into the wedding business, a wonderful girl named Marla took me under her wing and showed me the ropes of the wedding business on Maui.  I have her to thank for the start of my career as a planner and she has taught me so much along the way.  Unfortunately for the Maui wedding industry, Marla left the wedding business to open her own amazing boutique called Details.

Marla, gorgeous fashionista extraordinaire, met Gary, a boyishly handsome and humorous, at the roulette table in Las Vegas while Marla was visiting for a retail trade show.   Gary was immediately enamored and asked Marla out on a date.  The continued to talk over the phone after they returned to their homes.  Marla, living on Maui, and Gary was living in Seattle.  It took about a year before Gary announced that he was packing his bags and moving to Maui to be with Marla.

Since we as planners, know how important it is not to coordinate your own wedding (too much stress!), I had the pleasure of being Marla’s coordinator and was able to repay her for being such a huge part of my career. The planning process was so much fun, and actually very much stress-fee. Marla is one that knows exactly what she wanted form the very beginning which made the planning seamless.

Marla knew immediately that she wanted to hold the event at Haiku Mill, which is a reconstructed sugar mill.  She envisioned a romantic, vintage theme with fall colors, and we decided on a rich chocolate brown, complimented by muted golds and olive greens.  Because Haiku Mill is so rich in ambiance, we wanted to compliment the surroundings without going overboard.  We complimented the venue and the color scheme with dark burgundy dahlias, ivory hydrangea, and wax flower used in the centerpieces and scattered small bud vases.  We mixed in natural dark woods using Manzanita and succulents as well to give it a cooler complimenting tone.

For the décor, we played with strands of crystals underneath the canopy to compliment the existing crystal chandeliers.  Place cards were tea stained by the bride herself and attached to an array of vintage skeleton keys.  All of the table numbers were hand-painted by a wonderful artist from Etsy: Cheryl from My Primitive Boutique

Guests enjoyed simple, yet refined “pupus” by Maui Executive Catering (that’s Hawaiian for hours d’ vours), of Coconut Shrimp, refreshing Lump Crab & Rock Shrimp Summer Rolls, and Grilled Chicken Skewers with Thai Peanut Sauce.  For dinner an incredible buffet of Szechuan Veggies, wok-fired at the buffet, along with Macadamia Nut Encrusted Fresh Mahi Mahi with a Miso Butter Sauce, Hoisin Braised Short Ribs (OMG amazing),  with Wasabi Crème Fraiche, accompanied by Asparagus Risotto with White Truffle Oil and Shaved Parmesan Reggiano.  Ah-maz-ing!

Congratulations Marla & Gary!!! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of these incredible moments in your lives! Love & Aloha - Jane
